By March 15, 1964, the two were standing before a Unitarian minister at Montreal’s Ritz-Carlton Hotel, exchanging vows that made headlines around the world. A decade later, however, the fire that once bound them began to scorch.

On June 26, 1974, in Switzerland, they divorced—only to find themselves drawn back together again. These stories of rekindled romance echo a question posed by the Asian edition of Reader’s Digest: Would you marry the same person twice? Conducted across 15 countries, the poll revealed that 68 percent of respondents would gladly choose their spouse again.

Interestingly, the survey found that in the United States, Brazil, and Great Britain, those over 45 were more likely to feel satisfied with their marital choices. In contrast, younger respondents in the Philippines, Canada, France, India, Malaysia, and Spain expressed greater happiness with their partners.

The Philippine results were particularly striking. Only 20 percent of Filipinos over 45 said they would stay with the same spouse—perhaps a reflection of early marriages and evolving expectations.

Yet the country ranked second overall in marital happiness, with 76 percent of couples reporting they were glad to be together. China topped the list at 83 percent, followed by Germany and the Netherlands at 73 percent, and Australia and Spain at 72 percent.

Malaysia, meanwhile, scored the lowest at 59 percent, with nearly half of Malaysian men saying they would “untie the knot” if given the chance.

Marriage, of course, has always inspired humor as much as reflection. W.A. Clarke once quipped, “Before marriage, a man yearns for a woman. Afterwards, the ‘y’ is silent.”

Abraham Lincoln offered his own wry wisdom: “Marriage is neither heaven nor hell. It is simply purgatory.”

Comedian Rodney Dangerfield added, “My wife is always trying to get rid of me. The other day, she told me to put the garbage out. I said I already did. She told me to go and keep an eye on it.”

Yet beneath the jokes lies a deeper truth. Marriage is not a battlefield where one must win, nor a fairy tale where happiness arrives fully formed. As Ogden Nash advised, “Whenever you’re wrong, admit it. Whenever you’re right, shut up.”
